NGS library prep workflows are labor-intensive and time-consuming—especially if they include target enrichment (with oncology panels, for example). As a result, many genomics laboratories rely on automated library preparation to streamline processes, reduce user-to-user variability, and improve reproducibility.

AVENIO Edge Liquid Handling System Ordering Guide

This ordering guide covers reagents and plastic consumables. Please order the probes or panels separately. The word “run” on the AVENIO Edge System refers to two capabilities:

1. A full end-to-end workflow for library prep and target enrichment. This may include input control, quantification and post-capture pooling. This often consists of  multiple protocols executed sequentially on the System, with user touch points at the start and finish of each protocol. 

2. The end-to-end execution of a single protocol, with two user touch points for the beginning (loading) and end (unloading) of the protocol.


Depending on the number of quantifications used on each sample throughout the workflow (up to three per workflow), the second definition of “run” shall apply.

AVENIO Edge System reagents are fully barcoded, ready-to-use and modular to enable a variety of workflows. The reagent kits contain barcoded reagent mini racks, primer plates (96-well plates), troughs and/or tubes depending on the reagent volume, storage or other parameters. Each reagent kit contains enough reagents for three runs. The protocols automate a variety of workflow steps from sample input control, library preparation, target enrichment, quantification, normalization and pooling and more, all on deck. Modular design of the AVENIO Edge System empowers you to start and stop at your desired step in the workflow with an ability to select your desired batch sizes from 1-48 samples (in 8 samples per batch multiples). Virtual Reagent Kits

The virtual kits provide you with all the reagent kits required to run 1-3 runs of end-to-end library preparation, target enrichment and quantification on deck. The virtual kits assume one quantification step per run. Should you decide to quantify your samples prior to library preparation and/or quantify your samples before pooling, you may have to order additional reagent kits separately.

Sarah is a lab technician who is responsible for performing many complex projects that require her full attention, including NGS library prep– not one of her favorite tasks. Sarah would love to automate her NGS workflows, but she just doesn’t have time to learn a complicated new system and optimize the workflows.

Nate is a lab manager who orchestrates the day-to-day activities in the lab, prioritizes projects, and oversees general lab operations. Although he manages the laboratory staff, including Sarah, he sometimes joins them at the bench -- especially when project deadlines are looming. Nate is also responsible for evaluating new technologies to determine if they are a good fit for his lab, as well as ensuring that existing instrumentation is maintained.

Kevin is an in-house automation engineer who has many years of robotics experience. He supports all the labs in his organization that operate automated liquid handlers, including Nate’s. An important part of his job is to work with both the automation vendors and the lab operators to implement and optimize new automated solutions. Kevin is an expert in what he does, but unfortunately he is the only automation specialist in the organization and there are many complex projects that require the support of an automation expert.
