Virology

Applications

DNA sequencing of viruses has many applications including drug resistance testing, molecular epidemiology of viral pathogens, vaccine development, viral-host transcriptome interactions, viral surveillance, quality control/contamination of biologics and virus discovery. The virology field, in particular, could greatly benefit from next generation sequencing platforms due to its throughput, and ability to detect low-frequency mutations/subtypes within a viral population. Sequencing can also be used to provide a snapshot of an entire virus population from a mixture of similar or different virus types.
