Applications

Mitochondrial genetic variation is thought to be an important contributor to human disease. Next generation sequencing of mitochondrial DNA is useful for researchers studying human remains identification, forensics, mechanisms of aging, neurodegeneration, myopathy, diabetes, certain types of cancer and mechanisms of aging. Mitochondrial DNA sequencing is also used in studies of mitochondrial heteroplasmy, population genetics and biodiversity.
